Trinity RFC Vets 12 – 43 Old Reigatians RFC Vets

Friday Night Lights was back at LMA for a Vets friendly fixture with local rivals, Old Reigatians. Conditions were dry with a firm pitch allowing conditions to play an open brand of rugby for both sides. Trinity gave debuts to John Murawski & Teshun Edwards with welcome returns to a Mids shirt for James Orchard at full back and Rishi Gohill in the backrow.

Trinity came out of the blocks flying and were immediately on the front foot, strong carries from Macaskill, Leather and Tallboys enabled entry to the ORs half where the ball was spread to Hart on the right wing, with plenty of work to do he outpaced his opposite number, chip the fullback to regather and score a great try. Crouch slotted the conversion to give Trinity a 7-0 lead. ORs were playing with the slope in the first half which gave them the momentum to make good yardage with strong carries from their big forwards. The pressure told with 2 quick-fire scores pushing ORs into the lead – Trinity bounced back but with some unforced errors were unable to converted opportunities into points. Mihremane, Hall and Dupe were solid in the scrum and carrying well across the park,Stanton & Crouch connected well on several occasions to releas Edwards and Macaskill in the centres. The first half came to a close with ORs 26-7 ahead.

During the halftime huddle Trinity talked about the benefit of the slope and the importance of scoring first. Another strong start to the half and Trinity worked their way into the ORs 22, ball fed to Crouch who hit Macaskill on a short line to cross, 12-26. Now with some confidence Trinity were playing well, however were falling foul of some referee decisions which hindered their progress. Then a pivotal moment occured where the ball was worked to Macaskill who passed to Orchard hitting a strong line back towards the forward, good footwork and Orchard broke through to be tap tackled, then after regathering his feet crossed to cross. Trinity were jubilant feeling they were back in the game, however, the referee penalised Trinity for not releasing while on the floor. Perhaps a dubious decision as Orchard didn’t seem to have been held in the tackle. This decision seemed to knock Trinity allowing Reigatians to get hold of the game and score 4 tries through good open play, with a last-minute score signalling the end of the game.

Overall ORs fully deserved their win mainly due to strong forward carries allowing their free flowing backs to make consistent line breaks. Trinity worked hard with Scott, Macaskill, Hart and Hall in particular making strong carries and the whole team working hard until the final whistle.
