Trinity RFC A XV 29 – 24 Old Cats 2nd XV

Another weekend and another Surrey Alliance fixture for Trinity’s 2nd XV — this time welcoming mid-table Old Cats to LMA. Despite the week’s rain and a damp morning, conditions were decent, the main pitch holding firm. Trinity were boosted by a debut for Adam Kentell in the front row, Max Mouna returning from injury, and George Daniels leading from the back row.

Trinity started fast and immediately took control. Strong carries from Alex Scott and David Hoffmann put the side deep into the Cats’ 22. After sustained pressure, Adam Kentell powered over from close range, with Jack Greenwood adding the extras for 7–0.

A well-executed lineout — Jason Hoffman hitting George Daniels off the top — put Trinity back on the front foot. Good work down the left from Mark Macaskill and Zac Haque stretched the defence, before slick hands in midfield created space for Max Mouna, who released Tom Caplin to finish smartly in the corner. 12–0.

Moments later, the ever-dangerous Max Mouna scored a deserved try of his own, extending the lead to 19–0 after 25 minutes. Old Cats looked stunned, but to their credit they rallied and grabbed a try through their impressive inside centre just before half-time. Trinity went into the break 19–5 ahead, but with a sense they had let Cats back in.

The second half began with Trinity applying further pressure. After multiple phases inside the Cats’ 22, the ball was worked wide and Alex Scott finished in the right corner for 24–5. Trinity defended well as Old Cats tried to open up, with big hits coming in from David Hoffmann, Alex Scott and Seb Robertson.

Dominance at scrum time earned a 5-metre put-in, and the pack delivered — George Daniels grounding a well-earned push-over try. Credit to Dom Plumb, Henry Cotton, and Adam Kentell, who controlled the scrum all afternoon. Trinity now led 29–5 and looked in full control.

Then came the momentum shift.

Perhaps believing the match was already won, Trinity’s tackle intensity dipped. Old Cats began breaking the gainline regularly, and ill-discipline crept in. A series of penalties resulted in Dave Stanton seeing yellow for repeat infringements. Down to 14 men, Trinity conceded a try… then another… and suddenly the lead was narrowing.

Old Cats crossed again with five minutes left, bringing the score to 29–24, and the home crowd felt the tension rise. Trinity regathered themselves, controlled the restart, and after several composed forward drives into the opposition 22, they sensibly kicked the ball out to seal a hard-earned win — and a sigh of real relief.

Overall, this was a strong result for Trinity: a bonus-point victory and positive momentum heading into the pre-Christmas fixtures. They return to LMA next weekend to face Bec Old Boys.

Max Mouna — outstanding throughout, constant threat with ball in hand.

Dick of the Day:

Jason Hoffman — relieved of touch-judge duties after debating a tight “foot in touch” call with the referee… unsuccessfully.
