Match Report –
Trinity travelled to Raynes Park for their 2nd league fixture of the season having lost a tight game against Cobham in week one; Wimbledonians had secured a comprehensive win in their first game and conditions were ideal with the sun shining and a nice firm pitch. Trinity had some welcome additions to their squad with Alfie Watkins, Archie Bellamy and Jamie Cousins on loan from Croydon and Will Heaver from Old Cats. Center Ellis Simon making his debut and Harry Wilson returning to action after a hamstring injury.

OWs came flying out of the blocks, stunning Trinity with some impressive carries which resulted in a score on the left wing, 0-7. Trinity, still shellshocked, failed to react from the re-start and several missed tackles enabled the OW big 2nd row to run in under the posts 0-14 after 6 minutes. Trinity needed to get a grip on the game, and were able to control possession and following several phases Alfie Watkins barged his way over for his first senior score, Crouch conversion 7-14. OWs big front row were applying pressure at scrum time, but Dom Plumb & Jasper Brown held firm to enable steady set piece ball, with Wilson feeding Crouch to give momentum to Dean & Simon in the midfield. Strong carries from Scott & Sackey pushed Trinity into the home 22 but handling errors cost Trinity & OWs could clear their lines. Pushing up the pitch the home side crossed again, 7-21, through some effective backs play with Trinity struggling to deal with some broken field running. Back came Trinity again and with more efficient breakdown work ended with Wilson crossing with a close range snipe, Crouch converted 14-21. OWs finished the half with another score to go in 14-28 having taken all their opportunities well.

Despite the score line Trinity were confident they could get back into the game which would rely on improving first up tackles and finding a way to stop the OW strong carries. Changes at half time with Tom Williams, Archie Bellamy, Jamie Cousins and Tom Caplin joining the action.

Kick off and a sense of deja-vu with OWs scoring quickly after the restart following controlled possession. Trinity lost Mark Macaskill to a high tackle yellow card however with the ball in hand were constantly looking threatening. Brothers Callum & Aidan True both counter-attacked well to gain territory which resulted in impressive young prop Jasper Brown crossing for a his second try in 2 games. OWs were always able to respond after conceding and edge 2-3 scores ahead which meant Trinity struggled to get close enough to feel like they could win the game. Andrew Dean received a harsh yellow for a breakdown offense which made the task harder, but Trinity toiled and were rewarded with a try for Aidan True with a great finish on the left flank to gain the bonus point with 4 tries. OWs finished strong to win the game 49-24.

Even though the lost, Trinity could be proud of a good performance against an excellent OWs side who clearly have strong depth across their 1s/2s squad. The quality of the opposition has gone up 2 levels following Trinity’s promotion and the team is thriving in these contests to be challenged and to develop. Mention to youngsters Seb Robertson, Alfie Watkins and Will Heaver who all performed well, Crouch at 10 controlled attack play well and Sackey with an all-court performance carrying, tacking & jackling throughout.

MoM went to Jasper Brown with another impressive performance, strong in the set-piece, desire to carry and deservedly scoring another try.
