Trinity 1st XV Start Centenary Season With A Win
September 30, 2026
The club are sad to hear of the passing this week of our former player, John Armfield.
Aged 91, John passed away in his sleep on Monday 21st September at his home up in the Lake District where he had relocated to in recent years to be near to his family.
John was a pupil at Whitgift Middle School (later to become Trinity School) between 1945 and 1952 before becoming a very active member of the various Old Mid-Whitgiftian sports clubs.
Known as a fearsome tackler “Army” represented the club’s 1st XV at centre as well as on the wing for a period of 8 years and then playing for the AXV for an additional 4 years.
John was also a very talented cricketer with various spells as captain and vice-captain of the 1st and 2nd XI spanning the period of 1957 to 1991. He also held the position of treasurer of the cricket club for 24 years over three separate periods as part o his 48 years on the cricket club committee which led to him becoming a Vice President and then President of the cricket club.
Not done with just the two sports John also turned to hockey in his later playing days and also became the founding President of the club’s golf society.
Somehow in-between all his sporting endeavours John also managed to find the time to serve as booking secretary for the association for 5 years!
A true Mids Legend, John, will be missed by the many people at the club who were fortunate enough to either share a pitch or a beer with him over his many years with us!
